Leonia Library Faces Possible Budget Cut
LEONIA, N.J. — The Leonia Public Library is now closed on Sundays in anticipation of a 25% budget cut that would severely diminish the library's services and hours, library officials told Daily Voice. The trustees analyzed the impact the budget cut would have on the library and the results would be a library unrecognizable compared to what it is today, Library Board of the Trustees President John Kendrick said. The library may have to lay off staff members if its budget is slashed, he said. “Our trustees were deeply troubled by this information, as we knew that the effect of such a cut wo…

A former member of the Morris County Sheriff's Department, Kevin Helder, 39, was graduated from the police academy in 2008. He received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the State University of NY College of Oneonta. ““I am extremely excited,” Officer Helder said. “I’m very honored to be here. This is great opportunity for me.”

Teaneck University Professor Proposes Yeshiva Program Counterpart
TEANECK, N.J. – Fairleigh Dickinson University may have a new program on the horizon. Business professor Ira Jaskoll has proposed a similar program for women. Jaskoll of Teaneck also heads a program at the university for Orthodox Jewish men who are looking to get a secular education. Many men and women in the religious Jewish world spend years after high school focusing on religious studies instead of pursuing an undergraduate degree, Jaskoll said. Eventually, many of them decide they want a bachelor’s degree too. FDU’s yeshiva program for men accepts up to 72 transfer credits from religi…

Teaneck Restaurants Serve Up 'Dine To Donate' Events
TEANECK, N.J. -- Approximately two dozen Englewood, Teaneck and Tenafly restaurants will be hosting 'Dine to Donate' events to help feed youngsters with special needs and disadvantaged children in Israel. Participating restaurants will donate 10% of their profit that day to the Women's International Zionist Organization (WIZO). “We don’t do it for raising a big amount of money, but every single penny that we will make will go directly for hot meals for children,” said Galina Shenfeld, chairwoman of WIZO New Jersey. “People in New Jersey, by going out to eat, can help kids who are disadvanta…

Teaneck General Store Shuts Its Doors
TEANECK, N.J. – After six-and-a-half years, Cedar Lane's Teaneck General Store is on its way out. The store — that sells almost anything from games to coffee — will be closing down sometime in March, owner Bruce Prince told Daily Voice. “Retail is a tough business. It’s six days a week and my wife would like me not to work so much,” said Prince, 64. “As I get older I have to spend my time more judiciously.” The community store has served as a hub since it opened, offering Mah Jongg classes, learning groups, poetry readings and musical performances. Prince opened the shop as a way to conne…

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Three Bergen County charter schools got the go-ahead from the state Monday to expand enrollment for the upcoming academic year. The Bergen Arts and Sciences Charter School, which has campuses in Garfield, Lodi and Hackensack, is being allowed to increase its student body by nearly 35 percent. Englewood’s Palisades Charter School got permission to grow to 252 seats and the Teaneck Community Charter School can grow to 320 seats. “Being able to serve more students is in direct correlation with our larger mission,” said Ralph Gallo, lead person at TCCS. Classes there will…

It's Official: North Bergen Hospital Now HackensackUMC Palisades
HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The hospital on the Hudson River in North Bergen officially became Hackensack UMC Palisades this week following approval from state regulatory authorities. The acquisition by Hackensack University Health Network brings $50 million into the acute-care hospital for new equipment, operating room renovations and service improvements, reduces costs for billing, purchasing and insurance — and extends HUMC’s reach into Hudson County, boosting its ability to compete with Manhattan’s hospitals. It also is the culmination of a working arrangement between the two non-profits that b…

Tenafly Mom, Cardiologists Offer Children Free Heart Screenings
TENAFLY, N.J. — Learning that her friend's 9-year-old son nearly drowned of an undiagnosed heart condition while swimming on vacation is what Tenafly mother Jennifer Schwab Yanowitz said propelled her to make a change. Yanowitz is offering free heart screenings for children between ages 8 and 18 at the Stillman School on March 12. The equipment will be provided by Simon's Fund — a nonprofit organization that provides free heart screenings to communities around the United States — and the exams will be done by doctors from Englewood Hospital and HUMC. “They can really understand on a more …

Teaneck Scout Awarded Organization's Highest Rank
TEANECK, N.J. – Avi Samuel became only the 15th Teaneck Troop 226 scout to become an Eagle Scout in the troop's 46-year history. Samuel had his Court of Honor Sunday after six years climbing through the Boy Scout ranks. Getting there meant completing 21 merit badges, serving in a leadership capacity and fulfilling a community service project — installing floorboards on a muddy section of the Tenafly Nature Center's trail. “It’s like you join a company and you have to work your way up the corporate ladder,” said Samuel’s father, David Samuel. The Torah Academy of Bergen County senior said…

'Buzzing' Teterboro: A Lunar Aviation Hall Of Fame Exhibit
TETERBORO, N.J. -- There’s some buzz coming to Teterboro – literally. The Aviation Hall of Fame at Teterboro is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a Buzz Aldrin exhibit, opening in about two weeks. “Twelve out of 7 billion have walked someplace other than Earth. They have walked on the moon,” said Joe Lennox, the museum’s president. “Of those 12, only one comes from New Jersey.” Aldrin, who grew up in Montclair, was the second man to touch the lunar surface. The exhibit will feature a giant mural of Earth from space and memorabilia from Gemini 12 and Apollo 11 – two missions Aldrin fl…
