Whale-Tracking Buoy Off Atlantic City Coast Aims To Prevent Collisions With Boats Marine biologists are using a special buoy to study and protect whales off the coast of New Jersey. According to the state Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution put the buoy about 20 miles off the coast of Atlantic City on Sunday, Feb. 11. The buoy provides real-time monitoring of baleen whales by identifying their distinct calls.
