The crew was conducting marine operations training when they sent out a Mayday call after noticing their boat was taking on water near Gibson Island around 3 p.m. on Monday, March 28, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.
A Maryland Natural Resources Police boat was the first to arrive at the scene and quickly rescued all four firefighters who had been in the water for about ten minutes, the department said.
All people on board the vessel were evaluated by medical personnel and later released, the department said. The United States Coast Guard and Maryland State Police also assisted in the rescue efforts.
While the cause of the sinking remains under investigation, the Baltimore Firefighters Union said conditions on the water were bad because of a gale warning that was in place Monday.
The boat was later recovered a week later on Monday, April 4, the department said on Twitter.
