The animal rights organization sent a letter on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, urging the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club to retire its famed groundhog to a sanctuary and replace him with a vegan “Weather Reveal” cake. Carol Badart VanWie, of Lusby, pleaded guilty in court to multiple charges involving her violations of animal cruelty laws after she left her pets in inhumane situations at her non-profit Bunny Magic and Wildlife Rabbit Rescue. Prosecutors said that VanWie was found to have housed more than 40 rabbits and other animals in "unsanitary and inhumane conditions" at the non-profit.
