Local Firefighters To Be Honored For 'Outstanding' Heroism

A dozen local firefighters are being honored for saving lives - even at their own peril - by the 2020 Heroic Awards Committee, which recognizes outstanding acts of heroism and bravery.

On Monday, Dec. 14, Fitchburg Fire Chief Anthony Marrama said that Firefighter Roger Ortiz will be recognized for his “extraordinary rescue of a trapped woman down a ladder under extremely difficult conditions during the 4-alarm fire” at 7 Beekman St. in September 2019.

“The Fitchburg Fire Department is both humbled and proud to once again have its members honored at these esteemed awards. Congratulation to all of them,” the chief said.

Additionally, the following members of the department are being recognized for their meritorious group action, the chief said, which resulted in the “protection and then removal of a trapped occupant from exceptionally hazardous conditions on the 3rd floor during a 2-alarm fire” on Holt Street in October 2019. They are Chief Marrama, Deputy Chief Chad Courtemanche, Captain Andy Roy, Firefighter Michael J. Pawlak, Firefighter Bill Voutour, Firefighter Dean Osgood, Firefighter Kristy Pappas, Firefighter Yona Vaughan, Firefighter Kenneth Hollums, Firefighter Jeffrey Boudreau, Firefighter Skyler Kolski.

Firefighters will be recognized during the 31st annual Massachusetts Firefighter of the Year Awards.
