Officers from the Northampton Police Department found a man asleep behind the wheel of a car on Damon Street at the intersection of King Street at 2:13 a.m. on the morning of Monday, May 3.

While investigating the driver - a 34-year-old man from Chicopee whose name has not been released - he attempted to flee by jumping into his truck and putting it in drive while officers were conducting Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, police said.

Multiple officers intervened and were able to remove the man from the car and place him under arrest. At the same time, the truck, still in “drive” coasted across the intersection and into a bush.

During the scuffle, two officers suffered minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The driver was charged with resisting arrest, possession to distribute a Class A substance, and possession of a Class B substance. No initial court date has been announced.
