A nationwide cell service outage prevented many customers of several different service providers from placing or receiving calls, sending texts, or accessing the internet for much of the day on Thursday, Feb. 22.

About 74,000 AT&T outages were reported by the website Downdetector.com at 8:15 a.m. Thursday. Just after 10:30 a.m., the number reported was around 61,000.

Downdetector totals only include those who report outages to the website.

AT&T said that service had been restored to all those affected by the outage by late Thursday afternoon.

The cause of the service disruption remains a mystery.

Outages were also reported by Verizon and T-Mobile customers, but those numbers were far fewer than the AT&T outages.

In a statement early Thursday morning amid the outages, AT&T encouraged customers to use Wi-Fi calling until service was restored.
