Randolph James Mack, age 43, was arrested at his Essex home in Baltimore County on accusations he beat the toddler at a home on Ashmead Square in Belcamp Friday, June 3, the Harford County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies found a child inside the home, where paramedics were already at the scene attempting to make life-saving efforts for the girl. The 3-year-old was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly before noon on June 3, authorities said.

The Sheriff’s Office noted that “medics and medical staff advised deputies that the juvenile had suspicious bruising on her body that would be consistent with child abuse.”

The child was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine her cause of death. Her name has not been released by investigators.

A spokesperson from the Sheriff’s Office said that the motive of the fatal incident remains under investigation, though Mack was “a person known to the child.”

Mack was transported to the Harford County Detention Center where he is awaiting an initial appearance in front of a District Court Commissioner on charges related to the homicide.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the homicide has been asked to contact Det. S. Moro at the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division by calling (443) 409-3154.
