An alert was issued on Wednesday, April 3 advising that Calvert, St. Mary's and King George counties will be under the Tornado Watch until 7 p.m.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to begin forming between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, bringing whipping, potentially damaging winds, with large hail possible in parts of the area.

The storm is expected to push through northern Virginia and into southern Maryland, causing some flooding concerns in certain parts of the region.

"The main threats from the storms will be for powerful wind gusts that can break tree limbs and bring down power lines," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek said.

"There is also the potential for a couple of tornadoes, especially in the zone from eastern Virginia to northern Maryland," he added. "This is close to the area where the coastal storm system is expected to form."
