Gambrills resident Mariah Narain was struck and killed on Route 295 shortly before 6 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11 in Anne Arundel County, according to state police.
Troopers responded to a stretch of Route 295 near the intersection of Nursery Road on Sunday morning where there was a report of a pedestrian who was struck in the roadway.
Upon arrival, investigators said they found Narain lying in the roadway and a white 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan off the roadway, approximately 10 to 15 feet over the guardrail.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation determined that Narain was traveling south on Route 295 in the SUV when she crashed for unknown reasons and the vehicle veered off the road and crashed.
Investigators believe Narain exited her vehicle and entered the roadway on foot when she was subsequently struck by oncoming traffic, according to police.
Maryland Police from the Glen Burnie Barrack and Waterloo Barrack responded to the scene. Members of the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration also responded to assist with road closures and detours.
No driver has been identified as the person who struck Narain.
The incident remains under investigation.
