Fire crews were called to a fire at a multi-family home at 759 Chicopee Street just after noon and were told the boy was trapped inside, the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal's Office said. Firefighters rushed inside and pulled the boy out, but he was seriously injured. They rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he fought for his life for several days before succumbing to his injuries.

State officials did not release the boy's name, but a GoFundMe from the boy's mother listed him as Steven Windoloski. The fundraiser was meant to cover the cost of the funeral. The campaign has surpassed its $2,000 goal.

The fire displaced 15 people and killed three pets, as well.

Arson investigators believe the blaze started on the third floor of the home, but they have not pinpointed the cause, officials said.

Chicopee Fire Department, Chicopee Police Department, State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and the Hampden District Attorney’s Arson Unit are all investigating the fire.

“On behalf of the Chicopee Fire Department, I want to express our deepest condolences to this innocent child’s family and loved ones,” said Chicopee Fire Chief Daniel P. Stamborski. “This is a tragedy for them and for our community.”
