A New York man admitted he was drunk while underage, speeding, and ran a red light before crashing into and killing a police officer as she drove to work, prosecutors announced on Thursday, June 11.
Matthew Smith, now 21, of Hauppauge, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and numerous related charges for the Jan. 31 crash that killed Officer Patricia Espinosa and seriously injured his passenger, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said.

A Massachusetts woman has been arraigned on homicide charges after prosecutors said she was driving the wrong way in a deadly Route 9 crash that killed a wife and mother of a child, authorities announced.
Abigail Throckmorton, 23, of Ashland, was arraigned Friday, May 8, in connection with the February crash in Southborough that killed Crystal Johnson Clementi, 37.
The crash happened around 3 a.m. Feb. 20, 2026, on Turnpike Road, also known as Route 9 East, according to investigators.

Horrific Yellowstone Park Tour Bus Crash Kills 7, Injures 8
A crash involving a tour van and pickup truck near Yellowstone National Park has resulted in at least seven fatalities and eight injuries.
The incident happened around 7:15 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in eastern Idaho, along Highway 20.
Six passengers and the driver of the van, which was carrying 14 people, died in the crash, according to Idaho State Police.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
There was one occupant in the pickup truck, a Dodge Ram.

Police ID Weymouth Man Killed Crossing Busy Street In Quincy
Authorities have identified the man who was hit by a car while crossing the street in Quincy earlier this week. He died of his injuries a day after the crash.
William Jacobs, 58, of Weymouth, was hit on Southern Artery near Broad Street in Quincy around 7 p.m. Monday, March 17, the Norfolk District Attorney's Office said.
Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, but doctors were unable to save his life. He died Tuesday morning, the prosecutor's office said.
The driver, an 82-year-old Quincy man, remained at the scene and was not injured, police said.
