Police responded to the crash a little after 2 a.m. at the Church Street and North Frontage Road intersection in New Haven.
Officers found the 24-year-old New Haven man with life-threatening injuries, and paramedics rushed him to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he died of his wounds. The garbage truck driver remained at the scene.
An initial investigation found that the bicyclist had come off the sidewalk and into the road when he was hit, but police are still investigating the crash, New Haven Police said.
Authorities have not released the bicyclist's name as they are still notifying his next of kin.
