Multiple people across the state — and even as far away as Virginia — have reported receiving calls from the Hartford Judicial District State’s Attorney Office, with someone claiming to be an "investigator" or "special agent."
This so-called "agent" says the victim has been named or identified in a human trafficking, prostitution, or another criminal investigation and must pay a fine or face potential jail time.
That is not how the criminal justice system works. The Hartford Judicial District State’s Attorney emphasized they would never call residents regarding an investigation or ask for payment through Zelle.
"If you receive a suspicious call from (860) 566-3190, do not engage with the caller. Instead, hang up immediately," the office said.
The office also warns that residents should do the same if they receive a call from anyone claiming to be an officer or investigator from any organization asking for money.
For any additional concerns or to report suspicious activity, residents can contact the Connecticut State Police message center at (860) 685-8190 and select option 8.
