Wilton Holds Off On Yankee Gas Project As Costs Change

WILTON, Conn. – Wilton will not go forward with a vote on the planned Yankee Gas line investment project as town officials heard that it may cost the town more than originally planned.

The Board of Selectmen voted Tuesday to cancel a March 12 special town meeting to get voter approval for funds to help pay for the installation of conduits and other network project costs to bring natural gas to the town.

First Selectman Bill Brennan said in a statement that town officials discovered last Thursday following a meeting with Yankee Gas that previous cost assumptions were no longer applicable and “the town may be required to absorb some additional costs to meet the regulated investment criteria.”

Brennan added that town officials were told that the gas company could not install conduit simultaneously with the gas line and that a second trench from Center Street and Route 33 to the Wilton schools and Comstock Community Center would “substantially exceed the project’s costs” as the company initially planned.

Town officials will meet with the utility on Feb. 28 to review the project again, he said. Brennan said Wilton is looking at alternative networking plans to connect the town facilities. “All options and relevant costs will be examined and a recommendation presented to the Board of Selectmen, including the most cost-effective way to fund this project,” he said.
