WILTON, Conn. — The Wilton Family YMCA will take over management of the programs and services offered by the Norwalk YMCA, which closed its West Avenue facility in December, Y officials announced.
Both organizations entered into a two-year agreement under which the Wilton Y will provide senior management services for oversight of the Norwalk Y’s remaining programs as well as the evaluation of new opportunities, according to a statement.
“Last December, we announced the closing of our building, but what many Norwalk residents may not know is that we still offer a number of important programs for the community,” Carl Cooke, chairman of the Norwalk Y’s Board of Directors, said in the statement. “This agreement with the Wilton Y leadership will give us valuable expertise that will help us begin to set a new course for the future.”
Under the agreement, Wilton Y Executive Director Robert McDowell will now also serve as CEO of the Norwalk Y. McDowell has more than 32 years of leadership experience in working at YMCAs throughout the Northeast.
“Even though these are different communities, the Wilton Y has senior managers who are very good at writing grants, developing programs and building the teams that are strategic assets for any organization,” McDowell said. “We are excited that we can work alongside the competent existing child-care and day camp staff and apply these skills to our neighboring community in Norwalk, to help expand their services and programs in innovative ways.”
Cooke said he and other Norwalk Y officials were looking forward to working with McDowell and other senior managers from the Wilton Y.
“We are delighted to have someone of Bob’s caliber and his team come alongside us to help us determine next steps to make the YMCA services continue to bring youth development, healthy living and social responsibility to as broad a cross section of Norwalk as possible,” said Cooke.
