WESTON, Conn. Kristin Adams said she hadnt won a playoff game in five years of playing in the Weston Womens Softball League. Tuesday, Adams and No Mercy took the first step toward winning their first championship.
Allie DiMauro hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs as No Mercy defeated the defending champion Peters Spirits, 7-5. No Mercy will play 20-30-40, a 6-4 winner over the Weed Wackers, in the winners bracket final on Thursday at 6 p.m. The season-ending, double-elimination tournament wraps up next week with the championship round.
No Mercy earned the top seed after finishing 6-4 in a tightly-bunched regular season. DiMauros RBI double and Dionne Dunhams two-run single sparked a three-run first inning that helped No Mercy grab a lead it would never relinquish.
I think this year we finally came together as a team, said Adams, who created the team three years ago after playing for two years with Peters Spirits. Were the youngest team in the league and it took a little while for it to all come together.
DiMauro, who had two hits and scored three runs, crushed a three-run homer to deep center in the third to give No Mercy a 6-1 lead.
Peters climbed back with two runs in the fourth when Heidi Keeney and Julie Baisley scored. Peters added another run in the fifth and added another in the seventh. Keeney, Baisley and Karen Schottmuller had two hits each for Peters. The seventh inning rally ended on a base-running error when Peter's would have had the tying runs on base with the top of its lineup coming to the plate.
Dunham had two hits for No Mercy, which is sponsored by Camelot Real Estate. Dena Tunney scored a pair of runs for the winners.
I think we have a good chance this year, but the league is very balanced, said Adams, whose team bounced back after winning just two games last year. Any team can win it.
