A League of Their Own

For those who play in the Women's Adult Softball League, getting together twice a week for games isn't just about the game, it's about the camaraderie. "They're going to murder us, but we're all good friends," said Tami Campos, whose team, Lil' Kate & Campy, faced off against Peter's Spirits Tuesday night at the Onion Barn field.

"It's just so much fun because pretty much everybody here knows each other and if they don't, by the end of the season they're buds," said Campos.

Debby Gianelli, who started the league 21 years ago with the help of Park and Recreation and some of her friends, said although the games start at 6 p.m., the players often stick around to socialize, sometimes until 9.

"It's a very eclectic group of women...from every walk of life, from different jobs, different backgrounds, different everything," said Gianelli of the league, which has six teams and 120 women. "It's very competitive, but we still have a lot of fun."

Gianelli, who is the only one who has played since the beginning, started the league so that she and others could have something fun to do and a way to stay active in the summer.

"Our husbands had teams that they played on...and we'd always go up and watch their games and want to play, so we started our own league."

And for many of the women, playing softball is a chance to take some time for themselves.

"We get to come out and have fun and do something for ourselves because usually we're all running around doing stuff for our children or whoever," said Campos.
