The almost 2-mile section approved for the designation begins at the intersection with Route 1 and Compo Road south and proceeds south to the intersection with Bridge Street, where it turns west, ending at the west abutment of the Saugatuck River Bridge.

“It’s a feather in Westport’s hat and rightly so,” Hwang said in a press release. “Route 136 has natural beauty, rich history, and significant importance to the community and region. This designation also reinforces our support for the historic Cribari Bridge, which spans the Saugatuck. Westport is unique in that it is home to Connecticut’s oldest, moveable, hand-cranked swing bridge – a bridge that is on the National Register of Historic Places. We thank state officials for this designation.”

“I am proud to support this important recognition of how beautiful and historically important this portion of Route 136 in Westport is,” Boucher said n a press release. “One of the best attributes Connecticut has is our inspiring landscapes and this designation will protect this portion of Route 136 from overdevelopment. Our collective goal is to preserve this roadway for future generations. Our support for protecting the Cribari Bridge’s historic character is unwavering.”

To qualify for scenic road designation, a state road must have a minimum length of 1 mile and have significant natural or cultural features along its borders, such as agricultural land, a historic building or structure listed on the National Register of Historic Places or the State Register of Historic Places, or afford vistas of marshes, shoreline, forests with mature trees or notable geologic or other natural features which individually or in combination set the road apart from other roads as being distinct.
