Truck Cab Catches Fire on I-95 in Westport

The driver of a flatbed tractor-trailer carrying steel beams escaped with his life Friday night after the cab of his truck burst into flames on Interstate 95 north between exits 18 and 19.

At about 5:40 p.m., the Westport Fire Department responded to the call. Firefighters from the Greens Farms station were first on scene and reported that the cab of the truck was engulfed in flames, Assistant Fire Chief William Dingee said in a statement.

The driver told firefighters he had been driving for four hours, from Greenwich, when a red light went on in his dashboard. When he pulled over to check under the hood, he saw flames coming from the backside of the engine. The driver said he barely had enough time to grab documents from inside the cab before it went up in flames.

A wrecker towed the destroyed cab. A different truck removed the flatbed trailer carrying the cargo. The area was cleared just after 7 p.m.
