Ahead of the upcoming eclipse, which will occur on Monday afternoon, April 8, Connecticut school districts are beginning to announce early dismissals to allow students to view the astronomical event.
The two districts to announce early dismissals so far, both located in New Haven County, are:
- Oxford Public Schools, which will dismiss students at 11:40 a.m.;
- Seymour Public Schools, which will dismiss students at Seymour High School at 11 a.m.; Seymour Middle School at 11:30 a.m.; and Bungay and Chatfield Elementary Schools at 12:15 p.m.
In a statement, Seymour Public Schools Superintendent Susan Compton said the decision to release students early was made after "careful consideration."
"The eclipse, expected from approximately 2:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., poses a risk of severe eye injury if viewed without specialized equipment," Compton said, adding, "While some may plan safe viewing with their families, ensuring the safety of our students and staff is paramount."
Compton also said an early dismissal would allow students to experience the eclipse with their families.
