Heat Wave, Magnet School Top Weston-Easton-Redding's Week In News

WESTON, EASTON AND REDDING, Conn. – Hot, humid temperatures and the expected opening of a new local high school led the Weston-Easton-Redding area’s news this week. Here are some of the top stories from the past week:

? Residents were encouraged to conserve energy and keep cool as a weeklong heat wave baked the region. High temperatures and humidity combined to make it feel hotter than 100 degrees on many days. Many people sought refuge in official cooling centers.

? Easton students will soon have a new option for high school locally, as a campus of three science-oriented magnet high schools are set to open in Bridgeport soon.

? Redding is gearing up for this fall’s elections, with nomination caucuses for both parties. The Democrats met on Thursday, while the Republicans are scheduled to meet Tuesday.

? With prices at the pump jumping nearly 20 cents nationally in the past week, drivers in Fairfield County are now facing gas prices among the highest in the nation. The average in the state is $4.01 per regular gallon, compared with the national average of $3.70, according to AAA. 

? Connecticut came in third in a study posted on CNBC.com that calculated the number of wage earners who make more than $343,000 per year, the top 1 percent of the U.S. population. The study found there are 1,345 Connecticut residents in that category, meaning one out of every 2,657 people has an "ultra-high net worth." Connecticut was third to  Wyoming and New York.
