Forget the Books, e-Readers Are In

If you've been thinking about making the jump from good ol' fashioned books to something a bit more modern, then Saturday's E-Reader Rally at the Westport Library might be just what you need. Assistant Director for Public Services Beth Dominniani and other members of the library staff will be around to turn you on to a variety of devices.

"It's almost like a petting zoo for e-readers," said Dominniani. The rally will let the library introduce more patrons to the benefits of Kindles, Nooks, Sony E-Readers and iPads while helping those who already own one to fine tune and tweak their machines.

The library carries all four of the e-readers, with the Kindle available for Westport patrons to check out and take home. According to Library Director Maxine Bleiweiss, the Westport Library was one of the first places to offer a chance to actually use one of the devices. "In essence we were the showroom for Amazon, for the Kindle," said Bleiweis.

Almost all of the library staff pointed out how good the devices are for those with vision impairments. Though the different readers use proprietary file formats to store and read books, they all allow for font sizes to increase for easier reading. Some will also audibly read text to the user.

Library visitors can attend the E-Reader Rally between 11 a.m and 2 p.m. in the Westport Library Great Hall. Library members will be available to answer questions, let people toy around with the hardware and give some tips and tricks to get the most out of e-readers. People who already own one, are encouraged to stop by and share their tips.
