Deer Involved in Three Easton Crashes

EASTON, Conn. – Drivers are once again reminded to slow down and be on the lookout for deer after three car accidents were reported this week to the Easton police.

“This is something that people need to thinking about throughout the year, but especially this time of year, we ask people to slow down for deer,” said Capt. James Candee.

On Dec. 18 just before 1 a.m., police said James Cuddy, 41 of Newtown, was traveling north on Judd Road “when a deer jumped out in front him.” Cuddy, police said, swerved out of the way to avoid the deer but struck a concrete culver bridge and a tree before coming to rest on the roadway. Cuddy was issued two infractions, one for $132 for driving too fast and another for $117 for failure to notify change of address. No injuries were reported, police said.

That same day, at about 9 p.m., 57-year-old Martin J. West of Newtown was traveling east on Route 136 when “he saw what he thought was a deer in the middle of the roadway,” police said. West told police that when he attempted to swerve out of the way he lost control of his 2011 Ford Escape.

West crashed into a traffic sign on the side of the road and ran over a rock wall planter, police said. West was not injured but was issued a $132 infraction for failure to drive right.

On Monday, Dec. 19., Catherine Talone, 57, of Milford, was driving on Center Road when her 2002 Chrysler Voyager struck a deer that ran out into the roadway near Old Sow Road. The front of Talone’s was damaged but she was not hurt. The deer was severely injured and was later “put down,” police said.
