The Daily Easton asked five questions to First Selectman Thomas Herrmann, asking him to look ahead to his next term leading Easton. These are his answers:
1. Looking ahead to the next two years, where would you like to see the town going?
The answer is that I would fully expect Easton to continue to be the guardian of our regions water supply. I also expect that Easton will continue to produce quality education, high student achievement, and great social and cultural activities, and Easton will continue to develop as the needs of our community grow.
2. Is there anything you would like to see change in town?
I would like to see more people involved in our town meetings. I would like to see more people become a part of the process. 3. Going into this winter, many residents are angered over the loss of power in town and the utility company's response. What would you like to say to the residents and what can be done to calm those fears?
I think the United Illuminating Company has demonstrated a much better response after Alfred (the Halloween snow storm) than they did with Irene. We now have better communication between the town and UI.
I have also noticed a dramatic increase in the number of generator permits that have been filed. I think the residents have to decide to what extent the loss of power will be an inconvenience for them and how long are they willing to endure the loss of power.
4. Do you have any regrets over the past term? Is there anything you would change?
I said it before but I really regret that people are not involved in the process. It is very frustrating when people say that there is a lack of information and a lack of transparency in town, and when I sit through meeting after meeting month after month no one is in the audience but members of the press.
5. What excites you the most about returning as First Selectman?
I get excited about the people of Easton. I love this town. I love that the more time I serve as first selectman, the more great people that I meet. I am proud to say that I have been a member of this community for 30 years.
