On a recent sunny day, golfers of all ages hit the greens, with many looking to brush up their putting skills.
The property at Whitney Farms Golf Course was originally established by the Whitney Family as a farm with rare race horse breeding stables. A dairy farm existed on this land as well, according to its website.
The land was purchased in the mid-1970s by Chris Bargas Sr. After a three-year design, Whitney Farms opened as a public golf course in 1982 with no expensive membership fees. During this time, over 300 homes were added to form a golf community.
In redesigning the land, the architects took advantage of the ponds, scenic views and natural wildlife in the overall layout of the homes and course.
The 18-hole golf course was designed by Hal Purdy and built by Chris Bargas Sr.
Yardages range from 5,480 yards to 6,714 yards with slope levels of 127 to 134.
Many options are available for pricing – senior rates, season passes, discounted rates, and corporate rates.
Whitney Farms has received top marks for its condition by Golf Digest, Connecticut Magazine, and Connecticut Golf Magazine.
The beautiful wide fairways and forgiving but challenging greens are always in excellent shape, the website says.
Tee times are available seven days a week, and cart paths are always open from the first to the 18th green. Walkers are welcome, too.
Full restaurant service is offered at Sand Trap Grille and Bar, and the Stone Bar is available for private events.
