The 2016 model SUV was taken late Thursday night, along with a purse and other valuables that were left in the unlocked car, police said.

Personal property was also taken from at least one other unlocked vehicle that was parked nearby, police said.

The car owner reported the theft to police Friday morning, police said. The BMW X1 was located later that day, parked behind a vacant house in the Fair Haven section of New Haven, police said.

Trumbull Police continue to remind residents:

  • Always lock your vehicles when they are parked outdoors;
  • Take the keys with you;
  • Don’t leave valuables visible in the car; and
  • Park in a well-lit area, or in a garage when possible.
