Independent Trumbull Pharmacy Perfects Prescription For Front Line Service

TRUMBULL, Conn. — Alok Bhatt believes that "pharmacists are on the front line of healthcare." After 16 years of working in retail pharmacies, he is now able to tailor his customer service at Trumbull Pharmacy, which he and his wife, Charul, opened in November.

"Having an independent pharmacy means now I can give personalized service to my customers," Alok told Daily Voice. That is enhanced by the fact that his family also lives in Trumbull, though his clients come from the surrounding areas as well.

In addition, the pharmacy in the new Long Hill Green Plaza on Broadway Road is convenient with drive-through service and items such as surgical supplies, over-the-counter items, and some groceries.

Alok is from upstate New York. He graduated from pharmacy school at St. John's University, then worked at hospitals and retailers in New Jersey and Connecticut, including Yale-New Haven. In recent years, he worked at Walgreens Pharmacy stores in Fairfield County, the latest in Bridgeport.

Initially, the only challenge to launching the new pharmacy was "making people aware you're around," but word is out. Social media and the store's website help with that. Trumbull Pharmacy has seven employees, including Charul.

"In chains, the pharmacist gets maybe five minutes with each customer to know their background and talk to them, understand what medications they take. It's hard to give the personalized attention I want to give," Alok said.

To him, being a pharmacist is about being in a relationship.

"Unless you have time to find about your customers, get to know them and make connections, it is difficult. Pharmacists need to give customers the personal touch, find out about them, their families. This way you can  manage the medications better."
