Stamford Legend Jackie Robinson Would Be 93

STAMFORD, Conn. — Baseball legend and former Stamford resident Jackie Robinson would have turned 93 on Tuesday, his official website says. He was born on Jan. 31, 1919, in Cairo, Ga., and died Oct. 24, 1972, in Stamford.

Robinson is most remembered for breaking the racial barrier in Major League Baseball when he took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He became the first African-American major leaguer since 1889, before the sport became segregated, the website said.

Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. He was named the  National League's Most Valuable Player in 1949. During his 10 years with the Dodgers, he had 1,518 hits and a career .311 batting average.

His legacy lives on in Stamford with the Jackie Robinson Little League and Jackie Robinson Park in Stamford’s West Side.
