Barone joins the Stamford Y after six years of coaching swimming and water polo throughout Fairfield County.
“We are confident Brandon will continue to build on the underlying YMCA values that help our kids develop life skills, as well as improve their competitive swim prowess,” said Tim Dudics, vice president of operations at the Stamford Y. “We know Brandon will push for excellence in all aspects of our competitive swim program.”
The Stamford Y has more than 40 children who swim on its competitive and pre-competitive teams.
Barone, however, is well-prepared for his new role, with a lengthy list of competitive swimming and coaching credits dating back to his youth.
Most recently, Barone served as an assistant coach at Swim Seventy Aquacenter in Norwalk, primarily overseeing the 10 and under competitive squad and recreational programs, but also working with athletes up to the national level.
This past March, Swim Seventy became the 2016 Connecticut Short Course Age Group champions.
Barone’s own swimming career, which began in his native Baltimore, flourished after his move to Westport at the age of 7.
A former Westport YMCA Water Wrat, he has competed at the local and state levels, specializing in sprint freestyle.
He also competed for the Staples High School boys varsity swim and water polo teams in Westport, captaining the latter in his senior year.
Barone went on to earn a bachelor's degree in government from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., in 2010. While there, he competed on the varsity swim team all four years.
Barone’s coaching career began at his high school alma mater, Staples, where he assisted with the girls varsity swim and water polo teams.
He later became head coach of the boys varsity water polo team at the school.
Barone then coached swimming for the Westport Water Wrats for about two years, primarily working with the 11-12-year-old squad.
His role ultimately expanded to include the 9-10 year-old and 8 and under programs.
Additionally, Barone has coached water polo and swimming at the New Canaan Field Club since 2014.
