Redd, Fortt Wrap Trying Season at Penn State

STAMFORD, Conn. – Norwalk’s Silas Redd and Stamford’s Khairi Fortt played in Penn State’s final game of a tumultuous season Monday as the Nittany Lions lost to Houston, 30-14, in the Ticket City Bowl.

Redd, a sophomore running back who played at King in Stamford, finished the game with 53 yards rushing on 14 attempts. Fortt, a sophomore linebacker who played at Stamford High, had two tackles, including a sack. Both of Fortt’s tackles resulted in a loss of yards.

Redd, who battled injuries from November on, finished the season with 1,241 yards, the 10th highest single-season total in Penn State history. He also rushed for a team-high seven touchdowns. Fortt had 33 tackles, including 2 1/2 sacks, and played in all 13 games as Penn State finished 9-4.

The game capped a troubled season for the Nittany Lions, who saw coach Joe Paterno resign in November in the wake of a child-abuse scandal that centered on former assistant Jerry Sandusky. Redd was quoted in a Pennsylvania newspaper story as saying that he briefly considered transferring in the wake of scandal, but he now seems intent on staying at Penn State.

"When everything was first going on, definitely I had some thoughts about it," the running back said in The Times-Tribune. "But I sat down with a couple people, and they gave me the right advice. I decided that, whatever the situation might be, I was going to stay with Penn State. I've kind of established my career here. I had a pretty good sophomore season, and I think it would be pretty silly of me to get up and leave after my sophomore season when I'd have to sit out a year, because I would want to stay D-I. I wasn't willing to do that."
