King Falls to Greens Farms in OT After Comeback

STAMFORD, Conn. – The King Low Heywood Thomas boys basketball team erased a 15-point deficit with six minutes to play against Westport's Greens Farms, but it was still not enough. Matt Reggina buried a game-tying three-pointer with four seconds left to force overtime, but the Dragons got their energy back in extra time to down Stamford's King, 73-67.

“We had some tired bodies out there in overtime. The disappointing thing to me is looking back over the entire game and seeing the number of unforced turnovers we made,” King head coach Greg Dobbs said. “We made a great comeback though.”

King struggled for most of the game against Greens Farms’ 6-foot-9 center, Sean Obi, who dropped 29 points and pulled down 26 rebounds. King finally started frustrating Obi late in the second half by switching from a zone to man-to-man defense, which coincided with the comeback.

King’s senior captains finally came alive, as Drew Sawyer led the way with 26 points. Reggina and Chris Gaynor each netted 17 to help chip away at Greens Farms’ lead.

King pulled within three points with 18 seconds to play. Coming out of a timeout, Sawyer drove to the basket and drew several Greens Farms players with him. That left Reggina wide open, as Sawyer kicked it back out to the corner. Reggina calmly buried the three-pointer with four seconds remaining to tie the game at 62-62.

The struggle back to tie the game seemed to sap the energy from King as Greens Farms had the clear edge in the extra period. Reggina had another chance to tie the game with one minute to play in overtime, but his three-point attempt rattled out. Greens Farms’ Tremont Waters stole the ball on King’s next possession and Hunter Eggers iced the game for the Dragons.

“I think if you walked into this gym tonight and looked at the two teams you would say Greens Farms is a talented team and King has a few talented players,” Dobbs said. “But I think our guys have gotten to the point where they can compete with anybody. We just need to overcome these turnovers and we can get over that hurdle. We’re just not quite there yet.”

King (5-7, 1-3 conference) will have another tough test against a conference opponent on Wednesday. The Vikings host Rye Country Day for a 5:30 p.m. game.
