Trump fired James Comey, a former Westport resident, last week and has interviewed four candidates to replace him, according to Politico.com.
Trump bonded with Lieberman, the story said, and an announcement is expected before the president leaves on his first overseas trip Friday.
Lieberman, 75, was the Democratic vice-presidential nominee in 2000 and endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential race.
Lieberman is now senior counsel at the New York law firm Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman, working with Marc Kasowitz, Trump's longtime lawyer, Politico.com said.
