Burglary Suspect Easily Identified By Security Video, Stamford Police Say

STAMFORD, Conn. -- A man well-known to Stamford Police made their job simple after he was caught in a crystal-clear image from a security camera at a downtown building during an attempted burglary.

“He couldn’t have looked at a camera any better,” Sgt. Sean Scanlon said about Michael M. Sweeney’s image. “He posed for us.”

Sweeney, 42, of 495 Glenbrook Road, was charged with second-degree burglary. His bond was set at $5,000.

On the night of Friday, Aug. 5, police received calls about a break-in at a Summer Street building.

“The building had good surveillance, which is always a help to us,” Scanlon said. “He pulled on numerous doors trying to gain entry, but we don’t think he got in and took anything of value. But he definitely made entry into the building at night which is the definition of burglary second.”

When police received images of the suspect, he was recognized immediately by investigator Rick Vetter, Scanlon said, and prepared a warrant for Sweeney’s arrest.

Two officers who also know Sweeney arrested him Wednesday.
