At 12:30 p.m., the 911 dispatch center received a call for an unconscious child, not breathing, with CPR being performed by Chelsea Piers staff, the Stamford Fire Department said.
Engine 1 arrived at the sports facility at 12:37 p.m. and found the boy, a 5-year-old from New Canaan, unconscious but breathing on his own, the fire department said.
"Chelsea Piers staff pulled the child from the water and were performing patient care upon our arrival," the fire department said. Fire crews assisted Stamford EMS at the scene and enroute to the emergency room at Stamford Hospital.
The boy had been under water for about three minutes, the Stamford Advocate said.
Medical personnel were preparing to airlift the boy to Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital for treatment, but complications have kept the boy at Stamford Hospital, the Advocate said.
The boy was in a summer camp at Chelsea Piers, with counselors, lifeguards and other children at the small pool when the incident occurred, the Advocate said.
Chelsea Piers is located at 1 Blachley Road on the city's East Side.
