Firefighters rushed to the Shippan Auto Body at the corner of Halloween Boulevard and St. Mary’s Street in Stamford at 8:55 p.m. after reports of heavy smoke. Crews arrived to find flames bursting through the windows and had to cut through fencing and garage doors to get inside.

As the fire spread, the roof caved in, forcing Stamford firefighters to evacuate. A second alarm was struck, shifting efforts to a defensive attack.

Stamford crews gained control of the fire in about two hours. No injuries were reported. Around 50 firefighters responded, and crews remained on the scene overnight to prevent reignition while investigators searched for the cause.
