Stamford Neighbors Notes

On May 23, more than 100 parents, community leaders, students, and educational advocates convened for a Community Conversation on the topic of Safe Schools, making sure Stamford schools are physically, emotionally and intellectually safe. According to one of the organizers, Eva Weller, “We are the only location in Connecticut to have received continuous grant funding for the last six years from the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund to engage parents as partners with the Stamford Public Schools and community.”

Last Friday was awash in corsages and stretch limousines as the traditional teenage rite of passage began: prom season. Stamford High held its junior prom; senior prom is scheduled for June 3. At Westhill, it was time for seniors to kick up their heels in celebration at the Hilton, while juniors had already danced in April. Students at the Academy of Information Technology & Engineering donned their party attire at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich. Trinity Catholic held its combined junior-senior event May 26.

Stamford students Simon Handler, Emily Riordan, and Mollie Steinmetz had winning essays in the seventh Annual Rabbi Alex Goldman Memorial Contest. In addition, 10 seniors graduated from the Kulanu high school education and enrichment program. Kulanu, which means “All Together” in Hebrew, brings together Jewish teens in grades 8 to 12 from a variety of backgrounds, beliefs and communities.

Former Rippowam High School graduate Reid Lance Rosenthal, son of Stamford realtor June Rosenthal, was signing copies of his new book, "An American Saga: Threads West," a Western historical saga, at the BookExpo America in New York this week.
