Egan Dies; Operated Deli, Loved Cooking

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 1, for Virginia Jadwega Szymanowski Egan, who died last Tuesday at age 91. A Stamford native, Egan was fond of cooking as a youngster. Developing her culinary skills over the years led to eventually opening the Cove Hill Deli, which she operated until retiring.

She basked in caring and cooking for her family and friends and displayed vitality for life. Among her favorite pastimes were writing, poetry, dancing, music, bowling, golf and playing pinochle with loved ones.

Egan was born Oct. 30, 1918, as the eldest daughter of Marianna Obuchowska Szymanowski and Michael Szymanowski. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by sisters Anna Mary Barnes and Victoria Theresa Lione; and her husband, James J. Egan, Jr. She is survived by her children, Mary A. Williams of Stratford and James R. Egan of Arlington, Texas; grandchildren Robert Zito of Stamford, James Egan of Norwalk, Robert Egan of Millis, Mass.; and six great-grandchildren, nine nieces and nephews, and many other family and friends.

Family and friends may call from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford. A procession will follow to St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, 566 Elm St., Stamford. A service will be celebrated there at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at St. John's Cemetery in Darien. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 372 Danbury Road, Wilton.
