Board Vote Imperils Transitway

The Stamford Board of Finance on Thursday night declined to provide funds that would be used to complete the first phase of the Urban Transitway, putting into question a project for which millions in federal dollars have been secured.

This is the second time the board rejected funding. Thursday's vote, taken in public session after the board met in a closed-door, special session, was a reconsideration of a July decision not to allocate funds. A total of $4.83 million in city bonding and grant funding for the project was on the table.

The vote was 3 to 3, a stalemate that effectively resulted in failure to pass the measure with a majority vote. Board members Mary Lou Rinaldi, Gerry Bosak Jr. and Tim Abbazia voted in favor of allocating funds, while Bob Kolenberg, Kathleen Murphy and Chairman Joseph Tarzia voted against.

The funds would have been used to complete Phase 1 of the Transitway, a project intended to expand Jefferson Street and Myrtle Avenue to Main Street, and make the stretch of road more accessible to Internet 95. Reconstruction of Myrtle Avenue is part of Phase 2 of the project, for which $16 million in funding has been secured from the U.S. Dept. of Transportation.
