Board Seeks Transitway Answers

The Board of Finance will hold an Operations Committee meeting at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday to review information about the contentious Urban Transitway project. "The idea is to go over questions we have," said Board of Finance Chairman Joseph Tarzia.

Last week, the board voted to deny appropriation of funds that would be used to complete Phase 1 of the project. Board members expressed concern about how funds would be utilized. Issues included ensuring that additional bond funds would not be used, establishing an improved accounting of legal expenses, and having a better grasp on payments to subcontractors. Tuesday's Operations Committee meeting will help clarify these concerns, said Tarzia.

The Board of Finance vote last week was the second time the body failed to appropriate $4.83 million – which would be a combination of city bonding and grant funding–to complete Phase 1 of the transitway construction. The board plans to hold a special meeting later this month to consider the issue yet again.
