The 30 or so volunteers organized and ran 10 activity stations as the club's campers went through each challenge. The stations included tug of war, jump roping, and sack racing.

Michael Rizzo, who serves on the club’s board and is vice president of sales for Coca-Cola North America, said the soft drink company is hoping to inspire more than 3 million people to be more engaged in fitness. He said this activity continues Coke’s tradition of bringing people together and helping improve their lives.

Before taking part in the outdoor activities, the kids got some advice about staying active and eating healthy from other special guests at the club Wednesday.

State Rep. William Tong, D-147, told the kids about his own battle with his weight as a child and how he is still focusing on his fitness so he can play with his three children. He added that it is a lot easier to be not active and takes hard work to be active.

“It’s a lifetime commitment,” he said, “Let’s make sure we’re healthy.”

Maria Krol, president of the Connecticut Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, told the kids to take the activities they did Wednesday home and do them with their friends and family.

“Instead of playing the video game get outside,” said Anne Fountain, director of Health and Social Security for the City of Stamford. They should also drink water and eat fruit instead of doughnuts, she said.

“I can’t wait to get outside and run around, too,” U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn, said, urging the kids to do it every day like he does.
