Stamford Diehards Hit Midnight 'Avengers'

STAMFORD, Conn. — They didn’t sell out, but the midnight showings of “The Avengers” brought dedicated fans from around the area to Stamford’s Bow Tie Majestic 6 to catch the first glimpse of Marvel’s latest full-feature film.

“I have to get ahead of everybody,” Stamford’s Alex Joseph said about 40 minutes before the screening began.

“Everyone here really wants to see it,” Rob Longstaff of Stamford said of the excitement in seeing a midnight premiere.

Longstaff was one fan who couldn’t wait to see the movie — he was the first to buy his tickets online back in March and showed off the serial numbers to prove it. The movie buff added that he had been bragging on Facebook about updates he had heard, specifically mentioning Joss Whedon, the writer/director of “The Avengers.”

Despite having to wake up early on Friday morning, Brittany Hughes and Jeff Zimmerman of Darien did not want to miss the opening, even if it does run nearly two-and-a-half hours.

“We absolutely love all of the Marvel Comics movies,” Hughes said, “It’s worth it.”

“We’re secretly nerds at heart,” Zimmerman said as the two waited for friends to arrive.

The action film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson, recurring their Marvel Comic Book super hero roles (Downey as Iron Man, Evans as Captain America and Johansson as Black Widow), and teaming up with Thor, the Hulk and Hawkeye to stop the evil Loki from taking over the world, IMDB.com’s profile for the movie said.

For those who did not catch one of the two midnight showings of “The Avengers” — one was in 3-D — you will have ample opportunity to see it Friday with 14 other screenings throughout the day at the theater. Stamford’s State Theater will also have four showings Friday.
