Field of Flags Decorates Stamford for Memorial Day

Young Leana Hunt got a history lesson from her mother, Soraya Rosenfield, while the two enjoyed a sunny afternoon on the lawn of the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford. Rosenfield took a break from playing and took her daughter to see the 6,050 American flags the church has put up for Memorial Day.

You can't miss the sea of red, white, and blue against the Maguire Memorial Carillion as you drive up Bedford Street. Appropriately, Eileen Neville and the other volunteers who put up the flags added a sign to explain the significance of the flags so passing motorists understand.

Each flag represents a U.S. service member who gave “the last full measure of devotion” in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The volunteers who put the flags out posted a video of their effort on the church’s website.

“It’s just so impressive. It really brings home the human cost of these wars,” Neville said of the display.

Neville was the person who suggested the idea for the flags last year and after the positive feedback the church received it decided to put them out again. The flags were put out this past week and will be on display through next week.

A few patriotic events are scheduled for Stamford for those looking to mark the holiday. On Saturday night, the U.S. Marine Corps Band will come from Parris Island, S.C., to perform at Westhill High School. The concert begins at 6 p.m.

The band will remain in Stamford on Sunday and march in the Memorial Day Parade. The parade begins at noon and will go from Hoyt Street down Summer Street and end at Veterans Park. Veterans of the Vietnam War will lead this year’s parade.
