Man Speeding At 100 MPH On Route 8 Busted On Heroin Charges In Shelton

SHELTON, Conn. -- A Bridgeport man was busted on charges of heroin and cocaine possession after a traffic stop Route 8 in Shelton on Monday evening, according to Connecticut State Police.

At 6:30 p.m., state police from Bethany barracks were conducting speed enforcement near Exit 12 of southbound Route 8 in Shelton, according to police.

The suspect was clocked driving 96 mph in a posted 55 mph zone, said state police.

The driver first identified himself as , Stavon Taft, 24, of Bridgeport, but state police later confirmed his identity as Joshua Smith, 24, of Bridgeport.

Smith was operating a rental vehicle with Florida registration plates, according to police.

Upon conducting a traffic stop, Smith was observed to be making quick movements with his hands as an officer approached the vehicle, said police.

Smith was not listed on the rental agreement, according to police. He was also observed to be in possession of two cellphones, said police. 

Smith was taken out of the vehicle and the area where he was seen making the quick movements was searched, said police. 

The search resulted in the discovery of 104 bags of suspected heroin, a total weight of 1 ounce, 3.9 grams of suspected crack cocaine, and a large sum of cash, according to police. 

He was charged with reckless driving, more than 85 mph, two counts of illegal sale of drugs by a non-drug dependent person, and three counts of possession of narcotics with bond set at $50,000, said state police. 

Smith is scheduled to appear in court in Derby on Jan. 17, according to the report.
