Many volunteers showed up to the all-day event to clean up the banks of the river.

Housatonic River Cleanup provided garbage bags and work gloves as everyone went to work.

Volunteers also enjoyed a meal and gathering on the Sunnyside Boat Ramp in Shelton to celebrate their hard work.

"Thank you to everyone who came out and braved the cold, wind and rain to clean the river," Housatonic River Cleanup Inc. said on Facebook. "We had many who came for the first time this year who didn't realize how bad it really gets out there, especially on the islands. Spread the word next year! We need more help!"

Organizers reported that 15.5 tons of trash was collected in Stratford.
