Whirlwind Divers 2nd at Regional Meet

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The New Canaan-based Whirlwind Diving team finished second at the USA Diving summer Junior Zone A championships earlier this month at Rockville, Md. Whirlwind, which trains at the New Canaan YMCA, finished with 186 points and trailed only the Montgomery Dive Club (228 points).

Whirlwind, coached by Joe Somma and Allison Coleman, won the women's division with 91 points and was third in the men's with 95.

Whirlwind's top performers included Darien's Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, who took second on the 1-meter board and fourth on the 3-meter board for girls 14-15. Teammate Kylie Towbin took sixth on the 1-meter and 3-meter.

Wilton's Katie Warburg was sixth on the 3-meter board in the 16-18 division, and third on the 1-meter.

Whirlwind's Jackson McGoldrick took third on the 1-meter board for boys 14-15 and fourth on the 3-meter board. Darien's Timoty Luz was eighth on the 1-meter and 3-meter in the boys 12-13 competition.

Samuel Scribano took second in the boys 11-and-under 1-meter and 3-meter. Wiley Schmidt was fifth on the 3-meter and ninth on the 1-meter in the same age group. Owen Stevens was sixth on the 1-meter and seventh on the 3-meter.

Steve Kreuch, Kyle O'Donnell, Anne Farley, Amanda Pyne and Allison Courtney also competed for Whirlwind.

Whirlwind divers Kirsten Parkinson, Sean Burston and Rachel Burston were unattached because they recently changed clubs. Sean Burston, of Stamford, won the 1- and 3-meter for boys 14-15. Rachel Burston took second on the 1-meter in the girls 12-13 age group and eighth on the 3-meter.

Whirlwind will have nine divers in the Age Group National Championships beginning July 29 in Knoxville, Tenn.
