Greens Farms Field Hockey Wins Opener

WESTPORT, Conn. – The Greens Farms Academy field hockey team earned a shutout victory on opening day, defeating St. Luke's, 2-0, in a battle of Fairchester Athletic Association teams.

The Dragons spent most of the first half in the offensive end, earning six corners. Eight minutes into the game, GFA capitalized on a corner opportunity as junior Margot Bruder (Fairfield) inserted the ball to teammate Madison Leonard (Westport), who shot in a beautiful ball, which was deflected in by junior Liz McDermott (Darien). GFA never let up, coming out in the second half scoring the second goal of the day on another corner play.

This time the blast came from the top of the circle by sophomore Hayley Holzinger (Norwalk), assisted by Madison Leonard and Caitlin Rummelsburg (Fairfield). Sophomore Maggie Sherin (Weston) controlled the center of the field beautifully and senior captain Isabelle Canaan (New Canaan) led the defense for the shutout. Junior Ashley Hutchison (Westport) and freshman Hope Tierney (Fairfield) were stellar on defense in front of freshman Jenny Ross (Darien), who earned her first shutout in her first varsity game with five tough saves.

The Lady Dragons will look to make it two in a row Monday, Sept. 19, at 4:15 p.m., when they host Convent of the Sacred Heart.
