Four Teams Pursue District 1 Little League Crown

STAMFORD, Conn. – Teams from Stamford, Darien and Wilton continue their quest for the District 1 Little League championship in semifinal action Wednesday night at the Springdale Little League Field in Stamford.

In the first semifinal at 5:30, North Stamford meets Darien American. National Lione of Stamford meets Wilton in the second game at 7:30 p.m. The winners advance to Sunday's championship game, scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Scalzi Park in Stamford.

Darien American, managed by Al Filippone, won Pool B with a 6-0 record, the only team to finish pool play undefeated. Wilton (5-1) lost to Darien American in pool play, 7-6. Wilton is managed by Jeff Mastrianna.

National Lione and North Stamford went 5-1 in Pool A. Redding also finished 5-1, but Lione and North Stamford advanced on a tiebreaker. National Lione, which is managed by Billy DeVito, lost to Redding, 5-2 for its only loss in pool play. North Stamford, managed by Dave Grafstein, lost to National Lione, 4-1, for its only pool play loss. North Stamford is the two-time defending champion.

The district tournament is the first step on the road to Little League World Series next month in Williamsport, Pa. The district winner advances to the Section 1 tournament. To reach Williamsport, teams have to win district, section, state and regional championships. Fairfield American won the New England region title in 2010.
