Cranbury Still Nifty at 50

Cranbury Baseball's most famous alumnus will help the league celebrate its 50th anniversary. Mo Vaughn, who hit 328 home runs during a 12-year Major League career with the Red Sox and Mets, will lead the list of dignitaries when Cranbury opens its season Saturday.

Long-time friends of Vaughn asked him to return for the celebration, which will take place Tim Devine Field on Midrocks Road. Norwalk Mayor Richard Moccia, family members of league founders and past presidents are also expected to attend. The ceremonies begin at 10 a.m.

League president Dave Scarpone said nearly 300 uniformed players will participate. The first set of games in the league take place later in the day. Scarpone has been involved in the league for about 16 years, but this is his first year as president. "We lost some members with a lot of experience,'' Scarpone said. "There are a lot of people that work hard to make it happen."

Players as young as 4 years old participate in the Cranbury League. The league is open to all Norwalk residents.
