County Runners Among State's Best in Boston

On a day that seemed ideal for running, local finishers in the Boston Marathon were among the state's best in the men's and women's divisions on Monday.

Stamford's Candice Green finished fourth among state women in 3:08:30. Riverside's Sharon Vos finished in 3:10:54, which was fifth among state women and fourth in her age division. Darien's Liz Herbert finished seventh among state runners in 3:13:33. Herbert ran a personal best time in just her second marathon. Not far behind was Greenwich's Brooke Garden, who finished in 3:16:40 and 10th among state women. Heather Knight Pech of Darien (3:26.03) and New Canaan's Lisa Tuffy (3:31:07) also had strong runs and were among the Top 25 from Connecticut.

Norwalk's Tim Perry led state runners in 2:30:57, while Westport's Blake Benke was fourth in 2:37:23 followed by New Canaan's Jeff Niedeck (2:38:39). Stamford's Jeff Watson (2:46:59) and Fairfield's Christopher Barrett (2:48:44) were eighth and ninth among state athletes. Adam Daniels of Stamford (2:54:57), Darien's Michael Pond (2:59:48) and Darien's Brad Wellington (3:00:50) also finished among the Top 25 in the state. Wellington, in just his third marathon, ran a personal best by more than five minutes.

The men's overall winner, Geoffrey Mutai, ran the fastest marathon ever, finishing in 2 hours, 3 minutes and 2 seconds. Ryan Hall was fourth in 2:04:58, the fastest marathon ever run by an American. Kenya's Caroline Kilel won the women's race. Her time of 2:22:36 was the fourth fastest women's time ever run at Boston.
